In the northern part of Cameroon, in the south edge of the Sahel area, the life is hard for the population. In the short rainy season they grow as main food millet, partly in precipitous slopes on carefully kept in good condition terrace fields.

In the plain, people often live on cattle, in the cities mainly trade and services. The most important city in the region is Maroua with a population of about 250,000.
